After
two months of scratching our heads over a long-defunct candy product brought
to our attention by Jeanna B. - namely, Peter Paul's Smile-a-While - we
finally have some information about when it was sold. This, thanks to reader
David C.
According to Ray Broekel's
"Great American Candy Bar Book," page 38, there is the following information
- "Smile-a-While was a chocolate-covered coconut double bar that sold well
for a while in the 1950s." There is also an illustration showing a boxful of
these bars. Therefore, since the Mounds bar was changed from a single bar to
a double bar during the Depression (page 37) The Mounds predates the
Smile-a-While by roughly 20 years.
If you have any additional information
regarding Smile-a-Whiles, please drop
us a line. And thank you, David, for solving our latest snack
mystery.
Snack on.
