OFFICIAL SNACK REPORT
Sanctioned By WASAW Snack Committee

Reviewed By: Paddy O'Poppycock

LOCATION: Target, Palisades Mall (Nyack, New York)

OFFICIAL NAME OF SNACK:
Hershey's White Chocolate with Almonds (Limited Edition )

PRICE: $.75

WEIGHT: 1.45 oz.

DESCRIPTION OF SNACK: Traditional Hershey's bar with almonds, only white chocolate replaces the legendary Hershey's milk chocolate. Almonds are much easier to spot from the bottom of the candy bar than they are in the milk chocolate version. The almonds look like mini-nut islands in an ocean of white creaminess.

SSI RATING (SNACK SATISFACTION INDEX - 1-10): 6.8

UPSIDE:  Finally, a white chocolate candy bar that semi-successfully mimics the popular (legendary) milk chocolate version. Turns out, almonds taste quite good with white chocolate, and the white chocolate's light color allows you to count the number of almonds included in your confection by flipping the bar on its back.

DOWNSIDE: Lacks crave factor. When I finished the candy bar, I was impressed with its taste, but I had no desire to try another. Well, unless one was offered to me as a gift from Audrey Tautou.

Also, a marketing pet peeve of mine - "Limited Edition" sounds like it's a special treat, but let's be honest... it means Hershey's is testing an unproven candy bar by making a limited number before deciding whether to commit to putting money behind a huge launch. It's not like the Limited Edition Hershey's White Chocolate with Almonds bar is a collector's item. You're not going to be hawking this on eBay five years from now expecting it will pay for your kid's tuition.

INGREDIENTS:

White Chocolate
Almonds

PACKAGING:

The left side of the wrapper says, "this candy bar is intended for Lexus-driving, 401k-saving, Hampton vacationing, investment banker white dudes." The right side of the wrapper says, "look at me - I'm fun! Come on in, take a dip in my white chocolate pool of goodness. The almonds are doing cannonballs into the pool now. Hurry - the pool will be closing soon, so jump in while the gettin's good."

DO YOU RECOMMEND THIS SNACK? (YES/NO - EXPLAIN):

It's worth a personal taste test. I may never buy one again, but I'm very glad I tried it. Give it a try.

HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THIS PRODUCT?

Toss in two more almonds. Hershey's is actually quite generous with their almond inclusion, but the nut distribution was a bit off on my bar. The almonds appeared to be avoiding one end of the white chocolate bar like kids hanging out in the shallow end of a pool after seeing air bubbles appear around the fat kid floating in the deep end.

DID YOU HAVE A BAD CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCE WHITE CHOCOLATE BARS?

Good question, Mike Wallace. Yes, I did. When I was about 15 years old, a client of my father's gave my father about 150 Nestle White Chocolate candy bars. Why? I have no idea, but I was pretty pumped at the time. Only my brother and I were white chocolate fans in our family, and we began eating those candy bars for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Those were the only snacks the two of us ate for close to six months. By the time they were gone, I swore I'd never eat white chocolate again. And I stuck to that promise until I was 20 when I came across white chocolate macadamia nut clusters. Damn you, Mauna Loa!

WHAT OTHER WHITE CHOCOLATE BARS HAVE YOU REVIEWED THIS SUMMER?

Well, hell, thanks for asking!
