The Love/Hate Holiday Candy Relationship
by Paddy O'Poppycock
We're at the early stages of what will be six months filled with holiday-themed candy. It began with Halloween, has quickly been replaced by Christmas, will soon be taken over by Valentine's Day, and finally will end with an all-out Easter blitz.
It's unclear which came first: candy as a part of these holidays, or candymakers TELLING us candy is a part of these holidays.
Face it, holidays are peak selling times for snack companies. Take your product, reshape it into the appropriate holiday mascot, vegetable or shape, choose appropriate holiday colors for your appropriate themed new packaging, and watch as sales double, triple or more. Oh, and while you're at it, charge a little extra for the privilege of selling something that hypes a holiday weeks before it arrives.
Yeah, holiday-themed candy is seldom worth its weight in Lecithin, but WASAW has been around long enough to know that with holidays come glorious rewards.
Sir Snackalot was the first to realize this during the early part of October 1998. I had given him a Snickers Pumpkin to enjoy, and Snackalot didn't waste any time digging in. The result? Only the freshest Snickers product he -- or any WASAW member -- has ever tasted. And Snickers tend to be damn fresh, anyway.
Think about it. You grab your typical candy bar, bakery good or bag of chips, and unless you make an effort to locate the sell-by date on the wrapper (and who has time for that?), that snack could be any number of months old.
But buy a holiday-themed candy, especially weeks before the holiday has arrived, and you're guaranteed freshness. You're guaranteed taste. You're guaranteed the best that candy company has to offer.
So if you don't like a snack that's in a holiday-themed wrapper that's holiday is still a month away, there's no way in hell you'll EVER like that snack.
And don't forget the beauty of holiday snacks the day AFTER the holiday. That's right, 50% off sales. Stores never want to be without candy product the days leading up to the big holidays, so that guarantees extras afterwards. Which means one thing to you and me.
December 26th is fast approaching. Say good-bye to Santa and leftover fruitcake... and say hello to a motherload of discount snacks.
