OFFICIAL NAME OF SNACK:
Chase's Cherry Mash

Price: $0.79

WEIGHT: 2 oz.

DESCRIPTION OF SNACK:
From their website: "Cherry Mash consists of a soft cherry flavored center containing real maraschino cherries covered in a mixture of chopped roasted peanuts and chocolate coating." It is, says CherryMash.com, the third oldest candy bar in America.

Trust me, this snack is as unique as they come. Click here for a few short online videos on how the candy is made.

SSI RATING (SNACK SATISFACTION INDEX - 1-10):  6.5*

* Note: this rating most closely reflects the satisfaction I believe most folks would experience this Cherry Mash. Normally, we at WASAW rate a snack on our own personal experience. For me, I would rate the snack a 7.9 - however,  given its unique and strong cherry flavor, it isn't a candy I believe has real broad appeal. Which, come to think of it, may be one reason why I like it so much.

UPSIDE:

I bought a bag of Mini-Mash a few summers ago. At the time, I was into this kick of finding smaller candy companies in America that produce true candy originals. And guess what? My search basically began and ended with Chase. Its Cherry Mash is unlike anything I've ever eaten or could imagine eating. The first two or three candies I consumed were a bit frightening - the cherry taste and smell can be overwhelming. But soon I found myself craving the ol' Cherry Mash. The quality of the chocolate is really nice, the nuts ground into the chocolate makes for a great touch, and the soft cherry center (think cherry nougat) grows on you. Quickly.

I also love the brand. That little candy cop guy on the side is awesome. (He's also changed appearances a few times over the year.) And the idea of this small company in Missouri churning out this unique candy for the past 85+ years is just amazing.

.

DOWNSIDE:

Take away the candy history, the small company, the little candy cop, and the unique ingredients (chocolate liquor?), and you're left with a candy that is only slightly above-average. I can see why some folks go out of their way to get Cherry Mash - once you get a taste for it, it's tough to resist - but my gut tells me more people than not eat this once and never try it again.

PACKAGING:

Classic. It feels like it has been around since, well, 1918. Sure, there have probably been some tweaks throughout the years, but I've got to believe the essence remains the same. This isn't trying to be retro-cool, it is retro-cool.

DO YOU RECOMMEND THIS SNACK? (YES/NO - EXPLAIN):

Maybe. Cherry Mash isn't for everyone, but it certainly has great appeal to a great number of Americans. Check out some of these customer letters. That said, I'm sure even the Banana Dream gets a fan letter every now and then.

HOW DO YOU LIKE THE NAME OF THE SNACK?

I love it! The name Cherry Mash is unforgettable, unique, and for me at least, fun to say. Repeatedly. On long bus trips. Sure, some may think "mash" is no name for a candy, but I don't count them among my friends.
